Florida History: Uncle Sam says "I Always Pay My Debts" - May, 1919
This was printed in the Fort Lauderdale Herald (Fort Lauderdale's first newspaper), May 1, 1919. One might say it's apropos of these days.
$21 billion was raised for World War I by Americans with Liberty Loans and bonds.
This ad reads, in part:
We went in to win and to win quickly. We won. Now we have got to pay our bills. It means we must see the thing through - Uncle Sam's debt is your debt and my debt.
Let's put over the Victory Liberty Loan with a bang and square things up - buy for cash and buy on installments and do it today.
