It looks like fans of Riverside Market Café may not have to say good-bye. The re-bid for the empty city lot between a building owned by taxi magnate Jesse Gaddis, and the popular craft beer/eatery closed June 27 with one bid submitted by the market operator. Without that lot for patron parking, Riverside would have to close its doors.
"The city [of Fort Lauderdale] didn't tell me I won," said Julian Siegel, owner of Riverside Market Café. "They did tell me I was the only bidder."  There's more good news: According to Siegel, he and Gaddis had an amicable phone conversation this week.  A formal announcement about the status of the lot will be made by the city commission in August.

In the mean time, a zoning change or variance to the current residential zoning of the market will be applied for and most likely changed to accommodate serving of wine, beer, and food. Siegel said he will also have to draw up an off-site parking agreement to comply with city requirements. Until conditions are met, beer and wine can't be served with meals but will be available for package sales.

Riverside Market has been a popular Sailboat Bend and Riverside Park community gathering place for three years since it first opened. A neighborhood association meets there, city police make safety presentations at the café and people from near and far gather for the 500 choices of craft beer and noteworthy food.

About that food: five of us - four new patrons -  lunched there yesterday on pulled pork, and Reuben sandwiches, fish tacos, and some exceptional house-made sweet potato fries. That makes five customers sure to return to the Riverside Market Café.
