Beachcomber Resort, Pompano Beach: Perfect Florida setting ...

Built in 1954, the Beachcomber Resort in Pompano Beach has lost little of its luster while much around the city has, though a revival is underway. Adjacent Fort Lauderdale claims a more glamorous reputation with higher-end hotels and tourists, but Pompano still has the best, most expansive beaches. The Beachcomber provides a terrific venue to enjoy those beaches whether staying for a few days or stopping by to dine.

I recently joined friends there for lunch and appreciated the laid-back poolside bar atmosphere as much as the food, which isn’t pretentious. This is a family-run business and they try hard to please. Seafood is fresh; a daily catch is featured for lunch and dinner. They also serve some terrific conch chowder and conch fritters. An evening menu of steak, chicken, and pasta dishes includes some lunch items, which is ideal for families with young children and light pockets.

After lunch we walked a few steps to the beach and found a picturesque grouping of tables and chairs in the
sand – an ideal setting for special occasions (a marriage proposal, maybe?) including the weddings they hold at Beachcomber. It’s beautiful. Lanterns strung from palm trees add to the evening ambiance, which includes rhythmic sounds of the nearby surf.  There’s no cover from rain or excessive winds so check to see if they are serving on the sand before driving over to dine. A pleasant indoor dining room and bar is also available.
