SOFLA hotel and restaurant news

News below is updated weekly. If you have a restaurant about to open, please leave a comment and I'll include in this post.

Fort Lauderdale
The Retro Schubert Hotel will shut down April 26 as an all male accommodation and will re-open May 23, 2014 as the Victoria Park Hotel, a family-oriented hotel.

North Beach Village Properties will open its renovated, flagship property, the North Beach Hotel at 551 Breakers Ave. in April. With 17 rooms, it will also include a 200-seat restaurant. North Beach Village Properties will also complete the first phase of Flow Hotel at Bayshore Drive and Birch Road. With 25 rooms, the first phase will cater to the family market. A hundred rooms will be available when all three phases are completed and will span three buildings: the former Martindale, Sandy Shores and Seaside motels. North Beach Village Properties owns 17 properties west of A1A (and now the Schubert off Sunrise Boulevard), north of the Las Olas Bridge. It serves the LGBT community as well as the family market.

The company also owns Plaza Bistro, an open-air restaurant at 2900 Belmar, which now serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale/Lauderdale by the Sea
Blue Moon Cafe along the Intracoastal is now serving Saturday brunch ( a la carte menu) from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 4405 West Tradewinds Ave, LBTS 954-267-9888

Boca Raton
TwentyTwenty Grille is now open at 141 Via Naranjas (Royal Park Place) 5-10 p.m. Monday-Sunday. It's owned by Chef Weisheit and wife Rhonda who operated a highly acclaimed bakery and catering firm in Newburyport, MA. 561-990-7969 ...

The Surf Club at 9011 Collins Ave. will re-open as a Four Seasons Hotel property in 2016. The new condo hotel will be renamed the Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club with 80 hotel rooms and 150 condos. There will be four pools, a gym, spa and two restaurants. The complex will incorporate a historic building designed by Russell Pancoast and will be the fourth Four Seasons property to open in SOFLA.

Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport
HMSHost (  inked a deal recently with the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport that will bring about 25 restaurants to terminals 1 and 2 in phases. Phase one, to be completed spring 2014, will bring the opening of Starbucks; a total of five will eventually operate in both terminals.  Additional eateries are lined up to open by 2017 and will include local favs such as Shula Burger, Offerdahl's Cafe, Tarpon Bend Food and Tackle, Rocco's Tacos & Tequila Bar,  BurgerFi, and Anthony's Coal  Fired Pizza. Sergio's (Cuban food)  and Air Margaritaville (with Jimmy Buffet) will also open in the next few years.

01/06/2014 - update 1/25/2014 - U-Tiki will not be completed until as late as mid-March, 2014.
U-Tiki has a way to go before completion; I visited 1/5/2014.
U-Tiki is slated to open December or January (some say New Year's Eve) in Jupiter on the Intracoastal next to Jetty's, the builder/owner. U-Tiki will be a 250-seat open air restaurant with a stunning view of the Jupiter Lighthouse.

Fort Lauderdale

River House restaurant along Riverwalk remains vacant after Fort Lauderdale city commission turns down plan of Ohio-based company to convert the building to a bed and breakfast.

Hilton Worldwide announces plans for a high-end condo hotel at 551 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd.
The 24-story building, once named Trump Tower until the project encountered troubles, will be a Conrad Hotels and Resorts property with studio, one, two three or four bedroom units starting at $450,000. Hilton purchased the property for $115 million

Coming May 2014:  TKSF Management announced plans to open Tilted Kilt Pub and Eatery
between Las Olas Boulevard and Second Street. The 8,500 square foot pub will be the largest sports bar in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Additional units are planned throughout SOFLA

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea - Lauderdale Beachside Hotel, formerly the site of Howard Johnson's, was purchased in auction for $17 million by Florida Development Group, a team from Ukraine.

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea - New California Hotels Corporation purchased two  properties this year. One at 4116 N. Ocean Dr. that will  become Ocean One Resort. The same group will open a property at 4110 El Mar Dr. as Bungalows at Ocean One.

Bokamper's, located on the Intracoastal north of the Oakland Park Bridge, opened Thanksgiving week. Valet parking is $5 but there is plenty of metered parking available (see photos on this blog at: 

Italian-themed (and chain eatery) Buca di Beppo opened Oct. 16 at Coral Square Mall in Coral Springs

Hickory Sticks BBQ opened Oct. 14 at Coral Square Mall in Coral Springs. Delivery and catering services will also be available.

New Orleans-based VooDoo BBQ opened Sun. Oct 13 at 6312 N. Andrews Ave, Fort Lauderdale

Piccolo Ristorante (954-776-8066) had its grand opening Oct. 11 at 2826 E. Commercial Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.

Boca Raton

12/12/13 The Bridge Hotel in Boca Raton (999 E. Camino Real) is closed and will reopen as a DoubleTree-Hilton property, the Waterstone Resort and Marina in March 2014. See  or call 561-368-9500.

Bad news for Legal Seafood fans. The company plans to shutter the popular restaurant at the Boca Town Center Oct. 14. Other units in the Mid-Atlantic region remain open. Some of their 65 Florida employees will move to other Legal Seafood locations. The 6,500 sq ft Boca Town Center site will be the new home of Il Tocco, an Italian restaurant (yes, another). They plan to open in mid-December.
