Corner Café and Brewery - A Review in rhyme to soften the blow, save time

Corner Café and Brewery
289 S. U.S. Highway 1
Tequesta, FL 33469
Sunday, Monday 7:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.
Tuesday-Saturday 7:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.

At a place known as the Corner Café and Brewery,
locals gather for breakfast, lunch or to meet with the auxiliary.
The menu holds interest, and the food is not bad
but the way they keep the place is oh-so-sad.

Dishes piled high instead of carting them away,
empty wrappers, packets, dirty napkins left on the floor in display.
Tables outside on the patio are not much better,
only birds diving for morsels find glee in the litter.

How spiffy can the kitchen be if the dining area is not?
The owners and their help seem not to care about their spot.
My friends and I prefer to dine and drink
at a place that’s clean, clean, clean, including the sink.

Lest one think this was an off day or night,
Think again because this - the second visit to behold such a sight.
I’ll not make a three-peat because two chances are enough
To recognize this is NOT a diamond in the rough.

It’s rare that I recommend a drive out of one’s neighborhood for breakfast but I will for Tequesta’s Gallery Grille. Located at Tequesta ‘s art plaza, not far from the village’s government buildings, Gallery Grille will surprise  - both with its ambiance and food.

It may look like a typical coffee shop from its exterior; it’s not. The dining area, a mix of tables and a large, attractive square redwood counter looks more like a place to enjoy dinner. It’s a sophisticated, yet warm neighborhood establishment.

Freshly baked muffins sit in baskets along the counter – a real distraction (a good one) when trying to decide what to order for breakfast. Their buttermilk pancakes are out-of-this-world good: light and thin but deep in flavor. I don’t eat pork so was happy to see they offer chicken apple sausages. Eggs and omelets are perfectly cooked. One can also choose Irish oat meal, croissants or fresh fruit;  their menu offers a hearty choice for breaking a morning fast.

After sampling breakfast a few times, I went back to the Gallery Grille for lunch.  A turkey sandwich with slaw and fries was as good as the morning meal. They also make oversized salads, oyster po’ boys, fried green tomato BLTs - two items not often found in these parts - and a variety of chicken, beef and seafood dishes. Wine is available to top it all off.

No surprise that it’s always busy at the Gallery Grille. With above-the-cut–food in a stylish neighborhood setting, this eatery is a local favorite.

Where Small Crowds Flock: Hog Snappers Shack & Sushi - Tequesta, Florida

Hog Snappers Shack and Sushi

Tucked away in a strip shopping center along US 1, Hog Snappers could be easily missed except for sighting a small crowd waiting to get in.  The place has been a hit since it opened August, 2009.

Sushi earns high marks but their signature hog snapper sandwiches ($8 ) served on house made ciabatta bread also deserve applause. Portions are fresh – and huge. They also serve salmon, lobster cavatelli, paella, chicken, steaks and even ribs for dinner.  Skip the paella – not good. But the crab cake I supped on was outstanding; it wasn’t like any I’ve eaten before. Set atop a bed of coleslaw, accented with just a few tiny pieces of bacon and drizzled in a fantastic remoulade, it was enough, with a salad, for a meal. Much of the lunch menu is available at dinner hours, a good thing for the budget conscious.

The caveat here is the atmosphere. With cement floors, just a few tables*, lots of noise and a bit of smoke that drifts into the dining area from an open kitchen, Hog Snappers Shack and Sushi is short on comfort.  It’s not for quiet, leisurely dining. Crowds waiting to get in  ramp up the pressure to turn tables (for dinner arrive before 6 p.m.). For good food at reasonable prices, Hog Snappers is on the list.

Wine and beer served. Dinner entrées average $23, lunch $8. Service: good. Casual but think twice about bringing active children.  Copyright © 2010 Jane Feehan. All rights reserved.  Enter city in search box on right for more restaurants in area.
*NOTE: Hog Snappers has recently expanded and has added another bar ... a GOOD thing!
