Checkers Old Munchen, first opened in 1982, presents a low key, perhaps worn look to those passing by. Enter and both the good German food and European charm will change that notion.

First opened in 1982 by Munich native Chef Detlaf Neuman, the restaurant occupied a much smaller space than it does now. Today, under another owner Mathew Moore, the place has expanded into a larger space and includes an attractive German style bar replete with, as they say,  “the best selection of German beer in South Florida.” The list features Warsteiner, Bitburger, Kostritzer Schwarzbier, Erdinger and others that help define Germanic traditions.

The real scene stealer is the food. Checkers’ menu presents a full roster of traditional German dishes: potato pancakes and all the “wursts” and Wienerschnitzel, “bratens” and cabbage rolls, dumplings, and other dishes one can think up from that part of the world. It’s solidly good fare that’s modestly priced (dishes average $16). Lunch is also served; there are light salads with meat toppings to choose from for calorie counters.

Service: good. Look for the German and American flags flying atop a pale yellow building. Parking at the side or in rear.  Copyright © 2010. Jane Feehan. All rights reserved.

Galuppi’s draws not only golfers from the course that it sits on, but also business types and social butterflies for meetings, and those looking for a picturesque spot to marry. The food, though not for the gourmand, is consistently good.

A large covered patio and bar as well as a more formal table-clothed dining room with a great view of Pompano's public golf course provide contrasting venues for whatever the occasion. I’ve dined at Galuppi's for Rotary Club meetings and for lunch or dinner with a few friends and it’s always been a pleaser. It’s also reasonable. Lunches (from a large menu) average at about $10 and dinners can be ordered for just a bit more. Portions are large enough to share.

Galuppi’s knows its business; they accommodate groups as well as individuals with the same  efficiency and consistently good food.  It’s a great place for both winter and summer visits. Plenty of parking available. Service: excellent. © 2010 Jane Feehan. All rights reserved.
